Back From Our Trip

View looking away from Sycamore Falls, Fiery Gizzard Trail, Tracy City, Tennessee.

It’s back to reality here, as we just returned from our week-long vacation.  As is said about most vacations, it wasn’t long enough.   We piled the family–2 kids, 2 dogs, my husband and myself–into the van, loaded with way too much stuff, and headed out in the wee hours weekend before last.  The other dogs had to stay behind, as it’s just not possible to bring everyone, and I had to choose who I thought would be the best fit for this particular excursion.  I’d read that the trail I’d chosen could be quite difficult and treacherous, so I had to choose which dogs I thought would be able to handle it best.

Originally my trip to hike the Fiery Gizzard Trail was intended to be one I would do on my own, or rather just myself and a dog or two.  As summer neared an end and we still hadn’t taken a family trip, I decided to alter my plans a little.  Instead of ultralight backpacking we rented a cabin about a mile away from the trail head since we had the kids with us and neither of them had hiked a trail that was anything but flat before, so we decided to be cautious and see what we could do.  It was also Chewy’s first time hiking and the first time for both of the dogs on this type of rocky, up and down terrain.  I felt I should scout out the trail and see what I was getting into.

I really wanted the kids to enjoy it, and I felt that bombarding them with 13 miles of trail might possibly turn them off to the idea of hiking as anything resembling fun.  Remembering fireflies, waterfalls and splashing in chilly mountain water as a child made me want the same wondrous experiences for my own children.  So it became a family trip.

The Fiery Gizzard did not disappoint.

If you followed us via Periscope, we did a live broadcast with Q & A from the trail.  How exciting!  This week we will be sharing highlights of our trip, including photos and video of the beautiful Tennessee countryside.
